Protecting Greater Vancouver's Watersheds – A Panoramic View of the Risk Management Approach
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2002

Document Format: PDF

Description

This presentation provides an overview of the status of Greater Vancouver Regional District’s (GVRD) watershed management programs in British Columbia. Watershed management programs are based, in part, on the management of risks associated with water quality. Risk management approaches continue to evolve. These approaches include the assessment of potential problems, a determination of the probability of these problems occurring, an assessment of the severity of impacts, and the determination of potential corrective or remediation activities. Not all watershed management programs designed to reduce risks to water quality can be discussed within this paper. Rather, the focus of this paper is on a few key, evolving programs which illustrate the direction that GVRD is taking with respect to management of its watersheds that include: a closed watershed policy; wildfire management; watershed road network management; and, monitoring and forecasting.
