Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2009

Document Format: PDF

Description

This powerpoint presentation presents the Water Research Foundation Report #4131, “Optimizing the Sustainability of Treatment Processes for Nitrate Removal in Inland Communities”. A brief overview is provided of biological treatment, along with a project at the City of Glendale, Arizona that had the following objectives: to characterize the performance of biological nitrateremoval technologies; to identify co-contaminant treatment; to evaluate ongoing ion-exchange pilot performance based on the same criteria; to identify environmental issues for each technology; to develop cost comparisons; and, to evaluate biological and ion-exchange systems basedon criteria including the triple bottom line (TBL) of sustainability. Topics presented include: biological treatment for nitrate removal; biological treatment technologies; water quality implications of biological treatment; pilot processes; post-treatment performance; pilot conclusions; TBL Systems Analysis; TBL decision evaluation of nitrate treatment alternatives; and, TBL decision evaluation conclusions. Includes tables, figures.
